Prudential began life 160 years ago as a UK domestic life insurance company. Today, things are very different. We are a truly international business, with profits from our rapidly-growing businesses in Asia and the US outweighing those of our UK insurance operation.

In fact, in 2008, over three quarters of our new business profits came from outside the UK.

Growing markets

Despite the global economic slowdown, our strategy makes us well placed. Our geographical diversity offsets risk and because we're situated at the post-retirement end of the market, we're particularly resilient to these turbulent times.

Some estimates suggest that, in the US and the UK, some £7 trillion of assets could move into the retirement market over the next five years.

And despite the slowdown, there is still significant and growing retirement opportunity in Asia. Our capabilities, geographic presence and powerful brands position us well to capture value from this retirement opportunity.

Overall, our global position is strong. Our long term strategies mean we look further into the future than most so it's still a very exciting time for us.

We've developed a highly successful multi-distribution strategy, including a tied agency force of over 410,000 people and an emerging direct channel, as well as a significant network of banks and other partnerships.
